BOB’S BLOG

HOME / BOB’S BLOG

Bob Wilber grew up aspiring to follow in his father’s baseball footsteps, and while he was able to secure a full college scholarship and later spend parts of six years in professional ball, as a player, coach, and scout, his mother’s writing, communications, and public relations skills were what eventually defined his career. After a successful and adventurous sports-marketing trek through the sports-apparel business, agency work, and professional indoor soccer, he saw his first drag race as he closed in on his 40th birthday. Little did he know that he’d go on to spend 20 consecutive years as a team manager and PR representative for Del Worsham and then Tim Wilkerson, two of the most popular Funny Car drivers on the NHRA tour. At the conclusion of the 2015 season, Bob ended his drag racing run in order to take on an important personal assignment. Over the course of 2016 he wrote his autobiography, entitled “Bats, Balls, & Burnouts.” It was released in late May, 2017 and is available on Amazon.com and other major online book retailers, in both printed and digital formats. For the last year, Bob has been writing a new book, in the “historical fiction” genre. It’s entitled “How Far?” and was published on January 22, 2022. It is available on Amazon.com. Bob’s website was launched on February 10, 2022. Visit Bob’s Site to learn more about his life and his books.

Elephants On Parade

June 15th, 2017

The headline for today’s blog installment is misleading. There are no elephants involved in this blog in any way. And if there were, I probably would not put them on parade. Elephants deserve a lot more respect than that. It is also a coy reference to a song called “Pink Elephants On Parade” from the classic 1941 animated Disney film “Dumbo” which is also a name that describes me from time to time. So, this is really deep. Elephant connections on many levels all tied together in a web of obtuse references.

Monitoring the Monitor – I Cared That Much

June 8th, 2017

Back when I was running various professional indoor soccer franchises, I was the sort of general manager who could not stand to just let things happen, especially when it came to ticket sales. On game days, I’d hover relentlessly over the sales computer monitor, checking on how many tickets were being bought, where they were being bought, and how fast they were selling. As we got closer to opening the gates, I was the guys constantly peeking outside to see how many cars were coming into the parking lots, or taking a firm look at the ticket windows to see how our walk-up sales were going. I couldn’t help it. I cared about it that much.

In. My. Hands!

June 1st, 2017

I spent about half of my life knowing I should write a book. I spent a few years looking forward to whatever unknown year it might happen. I spent about six months of 2015 seriously toying with the idea, but not sure if the time was right. Late that summer, I made up my mind. In January of 2016 I began writing with no clear clue as to how long it would take or if I was even capable of completing the task. And then it was done. And then it was on sale. And now, the biggest of the big days I was anticipating is upon me. I can hold it in my hand.
